EXPLANATION

This VW gearbox is used across the range of VAG cars:-

Audi, Seat, Skoda & VW.

Particularly models:- Golf, Bora, Leon, Toledo, Octavia and Audi A3. 

   Symptoms: – Gearbox oil pouring out of gearbox, sometimes with slipping clutch due to oil contamination.

   Often the gearbox jams and the car can not be moved.Gears fail and there is no drive to clutch and wheels.

   Cause: - Hole punctured in the gearbox casing due to a sheared weak rivet on the differential failing. The rivets attaching the final drive gear to the differential are weak and shear off, sometimes after only 30,000 miles on early gearboxes. This a common problem with these gearboxes.(See diagram below) 

   Cure: - Replace weak rivets with stainless steel nuts and bolts, add reinforcing metal plate between the bolts and then fully recondition gearbox. (See photo showing heads of stainless bolts and nuts, with reinforcing plate beneath them)

   We would strongly advise against replacing with a second hand gearbox, as it is likely to have the same weakness.  The earlier cars are now out of warranty, and a new gearbox is very expensive.

   A cheaper, and more reassuring option, is to fit one of our modified, reconditioned 

gearboxes, complete with a full one-year guarantee and peace of mind.

FILLING MANUAL GEARBOXES TO CORRECT LEVEL 

   WE HAVE EXPERIENCED SOME MAIL ORDER GEARBOX FAILURES DUE TO INSUFFICIENT FLUID BEING INSTALLED WHEN FITTED. 

   MOST MANUAL GEARBOXES, ESPECIALLY THE GOLF DUU AND POLO G/BOXES, NEED BETWEEN 2.7 AND 3.1 LITRES OF ATF TRANSMISSION FLUID TO FILL THEM.

   THE BEST METHOD TO ACHIEVE CORRECT FLUID LEVEL IS TO FILL WITH ATF FLUID THROUGH THE SPEEDO DRIVE HOLE

AND TO OVERFILL THE GEARBOX WHILE IT IS STILL ON THE FLOOR, PRIOR TO FITTING TO THE CAR.    ONCE FITTED TO THE CAR, DO NOT REV THE ENGINE. ALLOW THE OIL TO REACH RIGHT TO THE BACK OF THE GEARBOX BEFORE REVVING, AS THE GEARS WILL STILL BE TURNING.  THE 5TH GEAR IS AT THE BACK OF THE GEARBOX, ALONG WITH A RELAY ROLLER, WHICH IS MADE OF PLASTIC. IF THE ENGINE IS REVVED BEFORE THE OIL HAS HAD A CHANCE TO CIRCULATE AROUND THESE PARTS, THE PLASTIC WILL MELT AND CAUSE THE 5TH GEAR TO BURN OUT, EVEN THOUGH WE PACK IT WITH GREASE WHEN FITTING, TO TRY TO PREVENT THIS FROM HAPPENING. 

 WHEN FLUID HAS SETTLED, CHECK THE LEVEL AND DRAIN OFF EXCESS FLUID TO THE RECOMMENDED CORRECT LEVEL.

Please note:- All gearboxes are sold on an exchange basis on the understanding that the customers exchange unit must be serviceable. If it is not, a surcharge will be imposed. 

TERMS OF WARRANTY FOR REBUILT ENGINES AND GEARBOXES  

Please note all engines and gearboxes are supplied empty of oil or fluids unless fitted by ourselves.

  All rebuilt engines and gearboxes supplied, and fittings, carried out by Volks-Apart, are subject to the following terms and conditions warranty:-     

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

1.      This warranty applies for whichever of the following periods is shorter:   

a)       12 months from the date of sale, or   

b)       until the vehicle has covered 12,000 miles since installation.  

2.      During the period of warranty, Volks-Apart will make good any defect, and if unit was fitted by Volks-Apart, we will cover parts and labour costs providing that:-   

a)       the defect was not caused by abuse, lack of fluids, incorrect fluids, failure of belts, gaskets and etc, or neglect, accident, racing, pacing, speed trials, or by any other modification or alteration, including non-standard wheels or suspension, repair or attempted repair, except for any carried out with Volks-Apart’s written consent.  

b)       the defect is reported to Volks-Apart in writing (or by telephone, confirmed in writing) immediately the defect appears. 

c)       unless fitted by Volks-Apart, the engine or gearbox must, as soon as  practicable, be returned to Volks-Apart for examination, repair or replacement within the terms of this warranty. This return will be at the customers own expense and Volks-Apart will not be liable for any transport or labour costs incurred. If fitted by us, the vehicle must be returned to us at customers expense. Volks-Apart will not entertain any claim(s) whatsoever in regard to labour costs, or any recovery/hire charges incurred in the fitting, removal or changing of parts supplied by us.  

3.      No variation or modification of the terms of this warranty shall be valid or binding unless it is in writing, signed by a responsible and authorised employee of Volks-Apart .  

4. The owner is responsible for the cost of maintenance items including, but not limited to, anti-freeze, filters, elements and belts, replaced during warranty repairs.  

5. During the period of this warranty, should a claim for excessive oil consumption be made, the owner must be prepared to supply adequate information to show that oil

consumption was exceeding the manufacturers specification.   

    6. Throughout the period of this warranty, the owner shall maintain and service the vehicle in accordance with the original manufacturers   recommendation.   

    7. Nothing in the above warranty affects the customers statutory rights.
